Anyway, I've also got a snazzy new website redesign where I'll try to update slightly more often, and you can see me post more regularly on instagram @jeffreybrownrq
Back to drawing now!
This happened one night a few months ago, after we put the kids to bed. My wife and I were in the office talking, and we heard our younger son wake up, kind of making little noises. Sometimes he talks in his sleep, we figured he'd fall back asleep or whatever, but we kept hearing little whimpers. Figuring he was having a bad dream, my wife said, "let's go get him". She got up and went to his room and then I hear her say, "Where is he?!". I get up and go to his room, and he's not there - we turn on the lights, he's gone. Then, from downstairs, we hear him start full on crying. It's pitch black down there, and he always comes to our bedroom if he wakes up in the middle of the night. Why would he go downstairs? My wife goes down and gets him and brings him back upstairs.

So a few days later, he comes home from summer camp with his book of drawings and I see this drawing. I ask him what it is, and he says, "slenderman". I ask why he drew slenderman, and he says "I don't know, I just did, I had to draw him, I don't want to talk about it." I don't know how he would even know about the slenderman myth, or why he would draw slenderman. SO CREEPY. I'm sure there's a perfectly logical explanation for all of this though. Happy Halloween!

I'm getting ready for my Lucy & Andy 3 tour, which will include stops in Seattle, San Francisco, and Minneapolis. But first, this coming Sunday I'll be at the Apple Store on Michigan Ave in Chicago, drawing cave kids on an iPad as part of The 2018 Big Draw Festival. The event is free, but you can RSVP now online.
And I'll be kicking my tour off in Canada at the Vancouver Writer's Festival! This is my first time in Vancouver (and first time in Canada in a few years), so I'm pretty excited. I'll be doing three events, a couple of which are ticketed, so make your plans now:
A few days ago, I did an interview for the One Thought podcast, covering both periods. And although it was just posted recently, back before my Star Wars books started coming out, I recorded this interview with my friend and fellow struggling cartoonist Chris Wisnia. For the record, I hate hearing myself talk, but hopefully you don't.
So the bad news is that after attending San Diego Comic Con for 15 years in a row, I won't be this year. The good news is that it means I'll be at the Arlington Heights Library Fan Con this Saturday, July 14! I'll be doing a drawing Q & A session, workshop, and signing books. I also got to design their attendee badge, for which I did a bunch of sketches. Which one did they choose to have me finish for the badge? You'll have to come to Fan Con to find out! Or if you can't come to Fan Con and still want to know I guess you can pester me next week until I post a picture of how the badge turned out...Jeffrey Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02153589441736882331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2483108772691558994.post-70127642791110172862018-06-18T09:37:00.000-05:002018-06-18T09:37:39.128-05:00Mickey Mouse shirts!

When I was invited to participate with some Mickey Mouse designs for UNIQLO’s Magic For All shirt series, I thought it would be a ton of fun, since I had really enjoyed working on the Star Wars T-Shirt Grand Prix with UNIQLO a few years ago. Of course, it’s not so simple as just drawing Mickey Mouse; first I had to figure out how I draw Mickey Mouse, and that meant figuring out exactly what my relationship with mickey Mouse is. So I started just doodling Mickeys, and thinking about Mickey specifically, and Disney in general.

My oldest brother is a big Disney fan, and that led me to remembering how I grew up with my family always watching “The Wonderful World of Disney” on Sundays. And magic is a really great word for that memory - for me, childhood was kind of magical, and Mickey Mouse always captured that so well, that sense of wonder at the world, curiosity, maybe even a little naivete. I eventually landed on a version of Mickey that felt right, something cute and innocent feeling.

I tried to tap into those nostalgic feelings I had and started drawing more Mickeys - Mickey walking through forest, playing with a toy steamboat, kicking a soccer ball. I filled a sketchbook with fifty or sixty ideas, and sent them to UNIQLO and DISNEY to pick from. The designers came up with four shirts, including one based on the little ‘How To Draw Mickey’ sketch I had made for myself. I re-drew cleaned up, nicer versions of the design on Bristol board.

The Hero Initiative has been doing their 100 Cover projects for a while, where they have artists sketch on the blank cover variants of comics, then auction them off as well as collecting the covers in a book to raise funds. Not too long ago, I went down to the Threadless HQ here in Chicago to be part of DemocraTee, where a bunch of local artists collaborated on drawings to be used as designs for shirts and other items. It was fun, lots of random silliness like adding this little cowboy to a larger drawing. The items are now up for sale on Threadless, with proceeds going to local arts charities.Jeffrey Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02153589441736882331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2483108772691558994.post-47799165001957319542017-12-02T17:08:00.001-06:002017-12-02T17:08:34.547-06:00Reading Materials

Way back in 1991, I had my first paying illustration job - images for a book by the father of one of my high school classmates. The book is unavailable (though you can see Mr. Murray's current work online at the Digital Couch) and the original art is lost, but after school visits in my home state of Michigan this week, I finally have a PDF of the book with my drawings! I'd pretty much forgotten what they were like. Here are a couple of my favorites, which are pretty typical of how I drew in high school.

Here's a few bits of research and inspiration for my Lucy & Andy Neanderthal series. The Geno 2.0 box is from National Geographic's Genographic project, which I used to learn that I have 2.2% Neanderthal DNA. The Neanderthals Art & Science Kit included a skeleton (which I assembled and set on the bookshelf in my studio office) and a plaster mold to cast a Neanderthal face (which is still in the box). There's a fossil of an echinoderm - which is a plant - but I like to think of it as some kind of strange, alien being. I got the souvenir woolly mammoth tusk and hair set, but also have a woolly mammoth card (with an actual piece of mammoth tusk) from Upper Deck's Champs Hockey Cards. From the same set I got the Neanderthal base card and a Neanderthal flint stone knife artifact. From Gibraltar, a one pound coin that commemorated the discovery of Neanderthal bones. A birthday card I got last year, and the prehistoric themed story cubes. And of course, an actual stone knife found in France (not by me) from circa 25,000-30,000 years ago. At that age it may have been used by early humans and not Neanderthals, but still makes for a great connection to the past.Jeffrey Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02153589441736882331noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2483108772691558994.post-7376779418605445142017-08-28T08:12:00.000-05:002017-09-05T15:12:43.554-05:00Wake Up And Draw Day

If you're like me, you've enjoyed making hundreds of Star Wars drawings and coloring them in over the years. But what if you don't like drawing Star Wars, and you just want to do the coloring? You'll finally be able to with the Darth Vader and Family Coloring book, coming out March 28! Available from places like Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and your local independent bookstore for $14.95. There are pages from the Vader and Son series of books to color along with brand new images. And no, this is not one of those "adult" coloring books, but it's not a kids coloring book either, so everyone in the family can enjoy! Except maybe your pet Loth-Cats.

Back in 2010 I had the idea of doing a fun caveman series that was grounded in all the exciting new research about Neanderthals I was seeing. The idea got shelved at the time, but when I was wrapping up my last Jedi Academy book, I thought it would be the perfect series to work on next. It took a couple years, a ton of reading, three rough drafts plus the final artwork - and the first book finally comes out today. Here's a look at some of the first sample pages and sketches I did for the project while figuring out exactly how to make the characters look and ways to include a little information along with the humor of the story.
So, the initial Kickstarter wasn't going to meet its goal, so Chris and Drawn Word have re-launched with a more modest campaign - it's a smaller base card set but you can still get the extra-cool cards on the new Change-Bots cards Kickstarter. See, this is where ambition will get you: somewhere almost as cool as you wanted to get in the first place. Pretty much indistinguishably cool in the grand scheme of things.

So it seems fitting that this post comes almost a year to the day since my last post. I think I've established myself as not a blogger, just someone who has a blog. I'm coming out of an intense work year, which I'll hopefully be posting more about in the coming months, but for now I'd like to direct your attention to the Incredible Change-Bots trading card kickstarter. I've always loved trading cards, from the old Topps Star Wars sets to the digital trading card apps like Kitten Cards, so when my friend Christopher Irving invited me to maybe draw something for the Madman card set he was working, I said "no, I've got an intense work year I'm dealing with." Then he asked me how I felt about maybe doing some Incredible Change-Bots cards sometime, and I said "awesome(bots)! "There's not much time left, and I'm sure we'll make this happen in some form, but check out these incredible prototype fancy cards! The pictures don't do them justice, so you'll have to pledge to get the full effect, unfortunately...
Here's a look at the sketches I drew when I started thinking about the cover. For book covers, I usually try to come up with 10-12 ideas to choose from.

My editors at Scholastic and Lucasfilm look over the ideas, giving suggestions about what parts they like and which idea they like best overall. Then I draw a rough color sketch at actual print size based on their feedback.

Everyone gives additional feedback after that sketch - in this case, there was too much green and so the suggestion was to make the chalkboard blue instead. A few other tweaks, and the final cover art comes together.

The title text is printed green even though I draw it in black, and the other cover elements like the Jedi Academy logo are added from the previous books.Jeffrey Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02153589441736882331noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2483108772691558994.post-77039496289834247192015-04-28T21:05:00.001-05:002015-04-28T21:05:32.108-05:00Darth Vader and Friends and happening and stuffDarth Vader and Friends came out today, and over at the Chronicle Books blog you can read a bit about how I pitched that and Goodnight Darth Vader. The new issue of Star Wars Insider magazine also has a feature with some behind the scenes and unused sketches. This Saturday (May 2) is Free Comic Book Day, so I'll be at Aw Yeah Comics in Skokie, IL from 11am to 1 pm, and Monday is May The 4th (Star Wars Day) and I'll be at The Book Cellar in Chicago from 4pm to 530ish. That means I won't be at the Cartoon Art Museum for the opening of a huge exhibition of art from Goodnight Vader and Vader and Friends, but stay tuned for details on the reception when I will be there in June. Finally, I was one of the judges for the UNIQLO Star Wars themed T-Shirt contest, but also got to design two new Star Wars shirts - one for men and one for kids.
Also, today is the day Jedi Academy 2: Return of the Padawan comes out in stores. There are two exclusive editions - the Target edition has an extra whole issue of the Padawan Observer, while the Barnes & Noble edition has extra Ewok Pilot comics.

*UPDATE* A lot of readers ask if there will be more Roan stories, or if I'll be doing more Jedi Academy books. I don't have any plans for more at this time...I would love to explore the world of Jedi Academy with Roan and his friends more in an animated show (hint, hint, Disney!), and I'm also hoping to do more Star Wars books in the vein of the Vader series, once there's more material with the new characters like Rey, Finn, and Kylo. For now, I'm finishing up the Lucy & Andy Neanderthal series, writing and drawing my first (proper) picture book, and starting work on my new middle grade science fiction series. Stay tuned!Jeffrey Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02153589441736882331noreply@blogger.com43tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2483108772691558994.post-522610827349733102014-07-18T09:09:00.000-05:002014-07-18T09:09:04.279-05:00San Diego Comic-Con!

So far this year I've been hard at work on the third Jedi Academy book, the next Darth Vader book, and the first book in my middle grade series Lucy & Andy Neanderthal. I haven't had much time to draw anything else, but managed to take a break and join in with some other cartoonists to celebrate Gene Luen Yang and Sonny Liew's great new book The Shadow Hero, which will be released tomorrow!Jeffrey Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02153589441736882331noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2483108772691558994.post-21620467131209403262014-06-06T15:29:00.003-05:002014-06-06T15:29:57.068-05:00Goodnight Darth Vader
