Ask me anything!

I'm answering anything you want to ask over on Reddit. Also, today is the day Jedi Academy 2: Return of the Padawan comes out in stores. There are two exclusive editions - the Target edition has an extra whole issue of the Padawan Observer, while the Barnes & Noble edition has extra Ewok Pilot comics.

*UPDATE* A lot of readers ask if there will be more Roan stories, or if I'll be doing more Jedi Academy books. I don't have any plans for more at this time...I would love to explore the world of Jedi Academy with Roan and his friends more in an animated show (hint, hint, Disney!), and I'm also hoping to do more Star Wars books in the vein of the Vader series, once there's more material with the new characters like Rey, Finn, and Kylo. For now, I'm finishing up the Lucy & Andy Neanderthal series, writing and drawing my first (proper) picture book, and starting work on my new middle grade science fiction series. Stay tuned!

  3. My son and I very much enjoy reading these books and are always sad when we come to the end of each book. Keep up the great work and hopefully we'll all be able to catch up with Roan and the gang in part 3 sooner than later.

  4. When will the Jedi academy 3rd book be released and in what stores

  5. I'm working on the final art for book 3 now, and it should be out next September if all goes according to plan. Hopefully it ends up in every store everywhere, but it should be available at your local book shop, your Scholastic Book Fair, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon at the least.

  6. Hi Jeffrey. My twin 4 year old boys love your "Darth Vader..." series. One of my guys told me this morning "I want Oscar's Daddy to write a Skywalker Family Halloween book." Just throwing it out there.

  7. Since you stopped making Jedi Academy books because Roan is in High school, I wanted to make a book on Jedi academy high school. I'm wondering if it would go anywhere (Get published). If it would need a money license or if I could just get it published through some company. I have a genius idea in mind for it. I just would want to write it under authorization of author. Respond soon!

    1. I'm glad Jedi Academy could inspire you! Unfortunately, I am unable to give any permissions related to the series, as the copyright is owned and controlled by Lucasfilm/Disney. Making books for licensed properties can be a challenge even for established authors, but I hope you keep coming up with new ideas and writing your own stories!

  9. Hi Mr Brown, my name is Elin and I’m 10 years old. I’m doing a school project on people who inspire us and your Star Wars books have inspired me to start writing my own stories based the ‘Jedi Academy’ series style of writing.

Although I have read your wiki, I wanted to know for myself. Would it be possible if you answer some questions? If so here are my questions:

    1. What inspired you to start writing?

    2. What comics do you enjoy?

    3. What age did you start creating comics?

    4. What was your favourite book growing up?

    5. How did it feel to win your rewards for writing?

Thank you for reading my questions and thank you for writing the amazing Jedi Academy books which I read over and over again.

Good luck with all your future books,
    Elin : )

    1. 1. What inspired you to start writing?
I’ve always loved book and comics, and I’ve always loved drawing and telling stories, so writing has been something I wanted to do as long as I can remember.

      2. What comics do you enjoy?
Pretty much any comic! Recently I’ve enjoyed The Wrenchies by Farel Dalrymple, anything by Kate Beaton, and Super Mutant Magic Academy by Jillian Tamaki.

      3. What age did you start creating comics?
The earliest was about age 5, but I stopped making them in college. I kept drawing and writing, but really started making comics again when I was about 25.

      4. What was your favourite book growing up?
Small In The Saddle, by Mark Alan Stamaty

      5. How did it feel to win your rewards for writing?
It’s pretty unreal to win an award, but really the most rewarding thing is to see kids reading my books and getting excited about comics!

  13. Hey Jeff
I'm a sophomore in high school and I have this career project in which I choose a career of my choice and within it, I have to get an interview from someone with that career. If I can get an interview about your career, that'll be great. THANKS. Love your Star Wars books.

    P.S.
I'm writing this book though it contains some material that isn't mine but is copyrighted or something. Do I need some permission for publishment?

    1. You'd want to consult a copyright lawyer before you actually published something- while there is some allowance for fan fiction, whenever you're working with someone else's intellectual property (new stories with someone else's characters, for example), you would need at least permission and often you or the publisher would be paying licensing fees to the rights owner. For my Star Wars books, Lucasfilm owns all the rights, and the publishers work out deals with Lucasfilm to be able to publish the material.

  14. Hey, what is the process to get permission to start writing using the Star Wars characters and names? I imagine it was no easy walk in the park!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Fortunately, I worked with Chronicle Books - who have a long publishing history with Lucasfilm and worked out the whole licensing deal side of things - and had the luck of at least one person at Lucasfilm already familiar with my previous autobiographical work.

  16. Hey, Jeff. I was wondering if u were going to write any Jedi Academy High school books. I have read the whole series, and on the third, it was kind of a cliff hanger at the ending. Are u going to and if not, why?

    ReplyDelete
  17. So Jeff are you gonna make Jedi High Books,a conteuation of Jedi Academy ?

    ReplyDelete
  18. How long of a gap is there between Jedi Academy books three and four?

    ReplyDelete
  19. why are the first 3 about roan but the fourth not??

  20. The Jedi academy a new year or whatever it's called looks like it's for little kids (I haven't seen the actual book). Look on the bright side if you make the high school series:

    Income from sales

    More fans and happier fans

    Better rep in writing

Increases your population so if you wanted to do their things in life people would know and support

(This one really isn't a real one) happier me. I hate classic literature. I love Jedi academy and origami Yoda.

(By the way, I didn't mean any offense about the new kid series)

  21. O wait the 4th isn't even written by you. I thought you said you couldn't give permission to write more Jedi academy.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Since Lucasfilm/Disney owns it, they're the only ones who can give any kind of permission related to Jedi Academy (and all of Star Wars) - so Scholastic was able to work with Lucasfilm to find a new author to continue the series, with new characters and a new story.

  22. Dear Jeffrey, My family and I read a few pages of your books each night before bed. We just started phantom bully tonight.. The kids took on the challenge of writing their own short stories from book two.. with your drawn and written advice and my tips they made delightful and humorous stories. Thank you from the Versis family 😊

  24. Mr.Brown is it possible for you to make a partnership with the author who made jedi academy new class that would be cool because wed see a little bit of Jeffrey brown stile in the new class and beyond books. That would be super

  25. So your done writing these books? All of my favorite books ended. It draws me AWAY from reading. Wat about books Ollie at Jedi academy? High school books would actually be more funny than the middle school. My opinion on the Jedi academy books are more interesting and exiting than funny, but that's definitely not bad. The high school ones could be more focused on being funny than being emotional (not in a bad way). I always get really sad on the ending cahoetrs if the final books and shows in series. Your making us sad.
